  1. The Gaokao, China's notoriously super difficult and high-stakes college entrance exam, is a major reason why many Chinese couples are choosing not to have children. The exam is so demanding that students who fail it are often ostracized and even driven to suicide. In addition, the exam is so important that cheating is punishable by jail time, and students are not allowed to bring any electronic devices or even get sick during the test. As a result, many Chinese parents feel that the Gaokao is too much pressure to put on their children, and they are opting to have no children altogether. They felt safe without having kids.
