The fact Eric acknowledges the need to fill seats of power with competent people but isn't willing to fill one himself speaks to the greater problem: most competent people just dont want to waste their time going through all the bureaucracy, the lies, the corruption that one has to participate in for decades just to get there. They'd rather spend their time reading a book, proving theorems, having interesting conversations with others etc.
