  2. The Chinese & the Russians are developing -- or have developed -- hypersonic weapons. The USA {and other Western powers} had best CATCH UP while it is still possible. The issue is not so much hypersonic weapons replacing strategic ballistic missiles, but tactical hypersonic weapons taking out naval aircraft carrier groups {and similar assets} and equivalent military land targets.

  3. Also: A 'surprise attack' on the west could be proceeded by a cyber-attack {or other attack} which would cripple much {or all} of our satellite surveillance systems. Remember that prior to the beginning of WWII, it was believed the US Navy fleet at Pearl Harbor was immune to aerial torpedo attack because the harbor was too shallow for air-launched torpedoes. The torpedoes would bury themselves in the bottom of the harbor before stabilizing in depth and hitting their targets. The Japanese Navy modified their torpedoes to OVERCOME that problem.

  5. FWIW: I used to be in the US Coast Guard, and for about the first year and a half I was stationed aboard a Cutter. A very few times when we were at sea, I remember hearing double-booms which I presume were fighter aircraft flying above Mach 1, although none were very loud. I presume none were close to us.
