The Eastern Airline L-1011 crash in the Florida Everglades around 1973 is a good example of that. The cockpit crew got preoccupied trying to troubleshoot a landing gear indication problem, and allowed the airplane to gradually fly into the ground....

  9. As I mentioned in another comment, I personally worked on Lockheed C-130 Hercules aircraft in the US Navy and then the US Coast Guard. With that experience, it SOMEWHAT AMAZES ME that aircraft like the C-124, and the C-54 and C-47 earlier during the Berlin Airlift, were able to HAUL all the stuff they hauled while being powered by radial {reciprocating} engines. One of the IMPRESSIVE THINGS about the C-130 Hercules in the 1950s was the improved power-to-weight ratio afforded by turboprops {gas turbine engines driving propellers}.

  12. In the B-52 crash - what little I know about it - the pilot in command had a history of 'reckless' flying, often ignoring safety regulations. He was never officially reprimanded as he should have been, and eventually his 'shenanigans' caught up with him AND THE OTHER THREE PEOPLE on the "BUFF" he was flying. Unfortunately.

As I understand it, some radioactive[?] parts of the one nuke that 'augured into the ground' were left in place - buried in the ground - because the ground water level made it impossible to dig down that estimated [?] 180 feet to where the parts came to rest. I've always wondered IF radioactive parts were STILL in the ground, wouldn't there be DANGER of ground water contamination?

  59. FWIW: I am originally from Florida, but I have been living in northeast North Carolina in mid-1995. I also lived in Morehead City, NC, near the central east coast of the state, from 1986 to early 1988. In both cases, I moved to "The Tarheel State" while serving in the US Coast Guard. My ex-wife, who I am still a close friend with, now lives not too far from Goldsboro, NC {approximately 134 miles south-ish of where I live now}. Two high school friends of ours from Florida, a husband & wife, also live near Goldsboro {the husband is retired from the USAF}. It was NOT until SEVERAL YEARS AFTER moving to NC in 1995 that I learned about the USAF's B-52 crash near Goldsboro, which occurred in January of 1961 {the month and year I was born}, AND the fact that some components of one of the two H-bombs deployed in that crash are still buried in the ground.

I worked around Lockheed C-130 Hercules aircraft in both the USN and USCG. Having ONLY seen photographs of Cargomasters, especially in the pre-internet days, I thought they were some kind of MODIFIED Hercules. Several years ago I first visited the US Air Force's AIR MOBILITY COMMAND MUSEUM at Dover AFB, and got to see a Cargomaster in person for the first time. The C-133 Cargomaster is BIGGER than a C-130 Hercules! The Cargomaster was actually the forerunner of the Lockheed C-5 Galaxy, and AFAIK the C-133 was the LARGEST turboprop ever operated by the USAF.

A B-52 broke up in flight, ejecting two H-bombs which landed in and beneath a farmer's field near Goldsboro, NC. Even more amazing is some bits of the bomb that buried itself in the ground ARE {supposedly} STILL IN THE GROUND.

That said, the downside to staging a bombing campaign designed to demoralize the enemy into surrendering is if your senior government leaders and military resemble the word "fanatical" -- the likes of which the world had never seen part of the 20th century -- the effectiveness becomes less definitive. In the case of Nazi Germany it took the suicide of that country's leader. In the case of Imperial Japan, it took an incendiary carpet bombing campaign AND THEN TWO A-BOMBS to get the desired result.

  271. This case is vaguely similar to the Eastern Airlines Lockheed L-1011 night time crash near Miami, Florida in the early 1970s. The flight deck crew had a faulty landing gear indication. They got so fixated on that problem that did not notice they had unintentionally entered a very gradual descent. The crew noticed something was wrong with the altitude just before the aircraft impacted the ground in the Florida Everglades.
