EDIT→ I posted this comment early on in a re-watch of this video. What you said about the paint escaping those instruments if they are poorly sealed pretty much answers my question.

  18. FWIW, I have one of those tritium compasses. Also two tritium wrist watches, and two individual tritium tubes on two key chains. I completely understand -- as a layman -- how tritium illumination works, but in a way it still seems like magic to me.
