  2. FWIW: Keeping the water jacket on the gun to be a cooling shroud may have been a necessity. Just having the bare engine cylinders on a reciprocating engine powered aircraft sticking out in the breeze might not provide enough cooling. Air -- like water -- tends to follow the path of least resistance when it flows, and that path not be close to all the cooling fins on your engine. Putting some kind of shroud or cowling around the engine aids in directing the airflow for maximum cooling. I presume the same would be true for this Vickers machine gun.
