FWIW: Older HC-130's I worked on in the USCG had an overhead 'mount' on the flight deck for attaching a sextant for stellar navigation. I never saw one actually used however.

ram j >>> Remember, when a helicopter takes off and transitions to forward flight, the nose of the helicopter tends to be low, due to how a helicopter operates. An airplane has its nose pointed up as it's climbing out, so it's not as likely to hit an obstacle near the ground.

Dude... switch to decaf!

TheWinnergroup >>> I'm NOT Mentour, but I'll take a shot at your question. The MAIN problem with FOD ["Foreign Object Debris" or "Foreign Object Damage"] is damage to an engine, where the {whatever} actually gets sucked into the engine. There's no similar 'suction force' in the landing gear wheel wells. FOD damage CAN occur just from debris getting kicked/thrown/whatever into the aircraft's airframe, but that can hapen anywhere on the aircraft that can be impacted by loose debris. Yes, I've been around aircraft once or twice...LOL

TheWinnergroup >>> I spelled out FOD for anyone else reading my reply. Based on your post, I figured you knew what it meant.

TheWinnergroup >>> Birds can get into VERY TEENIE holes. You'd need landing gear doors that were "hermetically sealed" to keep them out...

"...and also a little bit disappointing if you're a Flat Earther." 😄😄😄😄😄

Mentour Pilot >>> FWIW: I thought the flattened bottom of the inlets was to make the engines be not so much "FOD vacuums"....

On military aircraft, would these devices be called "the spoil[er]s of war"? Or would that just spoil the surprise? ;~)°

FWIW: I was an Enlisted Aircrewman in the US Coast Guard. I got qualified as a C-130 Hercules Loadmaster towards the end of my USCG career. I KNOW Weight & Balance is IMPORTANT for aircraft.

@MentourPilot >>> Great video...👍

At least there were NO INJURIES to people on the ground....

I first saw those spinning wheels not too long ago in another video {on another channel IIRC} here on YT. Until watching this video, I did not know what they were exactly or why they were spinning. Up to now, most of my turbine-powered aircraft in-flight experience {where I had access to the cockpit/flight deck} was as an Enlisted Aircrewman in the US Coast Guard. I flew on the HU-25 Falcon, CASA 212 {yes, the USCG once had ONE of them}, and the HC-130H Hercules. It either never happened in those aircraft, I never saw it, or {now} 20+ years later I have forgotten it. .

EveryTypeOfVideo >>> Watch the Bond film GOLDFINGER. The business jet in that is a Lockheed JetStar.
