  2. The tunnel combat sounds like the mining operations on the Western Front in WW1, when British and German soldiers tunnelled under each other's lines and sometimes broke into the other's tunnels and engaged in combat.

If the minorities in Syria (Alawites, Armenians, Assyrians, Shia, Druze, Christians, Kurds and all the others) had any political sense, they would go for a secular regime and combine against the Jihadis and forget about hostility towards Israel and ditch the Golan issue and ask Israel for some help. The Baathists are utterly incomprehensible in their hostility towards Israel when they face the risk of annihilation at the hands of the rebels.

  7. Azerbaijan has a vicious regime which has recently driven tens of thousands of Armenians out of Artsakh, with Israeli weapons. It does Israel no credit to be friendly with and giving help the Azeri government.

I have heard Druze say that under a strict Islamic state (e.g. Wahhabi Sunni, not Shia like Hizb) they had no way to survive as they cannot be allowed to convert or pay the Jiziyah tax, unlike Jews and Christians as the Druze came after Islam and are seen as heretics. The Golani Druze might see themselves as Syrians not Israelis, but now they must see that they have little hope of being left alone under Syrian or Lebanese rule.

  13. Yes, I have noticed this, it seems to be a term for a rank perhaps like 'Sergeant-Major', all the ranks in the IDF are named in Hebrew and I am not sure if this has been anglicised correctly. It is not just Yair, other Israeli sources use this term for what seems to be a junior rank, probably an NCO rank. Originally the 'Major-General' was 'Sergeant-Major General' which is why the rank is junior to 'Lieutenant-General' in most armies. The IDF ranks are not quite the same as with most armies.

  14. Hamas would not have built so many tunnels if they had not planned for an Israeli invasion as a near certainty. And they planned the terror of October 7th to ensure that there would be an invasion, hoping presumably to fight the IDF to a standstill. I think they have miscalculated.

  18. The smart Shia would surely know that Sunni radicals regard them as heretics to be dealt with. If Israel vanished, Hizbollah and Hamas would be likely to be at war if they were neighbours. What if Israel were to build a very long tunnel to link Lebanon to Gaza....?
