The guy was either an idiot or wanted to get caught. I don't think serial killers are as smart and cunning as they're made out to be. I think they're similar to idiot savants where their brains excel in a few areas, but are severely lacking in others. Ted Bundy is an example of this, if you really listen to him talk, he wasn't particularly bright. Lots of talking in circles without really making any sort of meaningful point. I thought the same about Ed Kemper, he sounded well spoken but in actuality didn't really have anything that interesting or clever to say.
