It's a hard comparison, but he did a good job. I think if you don't overpay, which is difficult these days, owning comes out on top in the long run. After the house is paid off, you're just paying for repairs and property taxes. I think after you reach this point it starts swinging in favor of owning. I would not want to be a first time homebuyer in the current market though.

@meowymeow282 Nobody is retiring at 33 or less unless they make a very high income and save almost all of it right out of the gate. That's a pipe dream. I laugh when I see FIRE people that are like 30 thinking they can survive the rest of their lives on $1million or less. They're in for a rude awakening when they're 50.

There is value to this level of diversification, but in my experience (20 plus years of investing) it hasn't benefitted me at all. This may be short sighted of me, and I am not an expert by any means, but my experience has led me to my current allocation of 100% US stock index funds (VTSAX and VIIX). I feel that overthinking and overdiversifying has left a lot of gains on the table for me. Am I wrong? Maybe, but this allocation is what I believe in. I believe in the US market and I'm not wasting my time with anything else.

@MAILER-DAEMON There's a lot to criticize the FIRE movement for. I think living like you're trying to FIRE is a good thing, however people grossly underestimate how much you need to live off investments the rest of your life when you retire that young. Most of these people would need to stay pretty aggressive to produce enough income. A crash would be absolutely devastating, especially when they've been out of the workforce for a long time, say in their late 50's. Good luck.

In case you didn't notice, the investing world is full of snake oil salesmen, preying on people's fears. Money is made by scaring people into risky investments and get rich quick type schemes. Investing in an index fund is boring, and boring is good. Slow and steady has always won the race and always will.

@matejsvec4451 I hate holding lots of cash, but I don't see any other way to weather a bear market. I also feel like a lot of people looking at FIRE, have never really lived through a recession, and they can't really appreciate just how scary it can be. A lot of these younger people have only known a bull market. Not their fault, but when the shit hits the fan, you will see what you're really made of, and whether you have a strong stomach or not. Most people make terrible decisions unfortunately.

Ramsey is selling an investment product on his show, that's why he consistently recommends mutual funds over index funds. Sorry if this sounds mean or elitist, but most of his fan base are not the most financially literate or sophisticated people, he knows this and exploits it. A lot of his callers are just trying to put food on the table and get out of debt, they've never invested a dollar in their lives and most likely didn't come from families that did either. His advise is good for general budgeting habits and staying out of debt, but do not follow him for investing advice, at all.

If you're worried about society collapsing, invest in yourself. Learn how to survive in the wild. There is no guarantee people would even place any value in gold anyways. In a normal world, it does nothing but sit there, doing nothing, earning nothing. It makes some people feel more secure, so that is the only value I would give it. If it makes you feel warm and fuzzy and helps you sleep at night, by all means buy gold.

I made the mistake of investing in an actively managed fund for my entire 20's and into my 30's until I finally wised up. The fees eat into your gains, essentially negating any benefit you had with an actively managed fund, assuming it was better in the first place, which most aren't. Perhaps uber-wealthy individuals have access to funds and advice that regular people don't, so it's best to stick to owning the market. With a low cost index fund, and time in the market, it's virtually a guarantee that you will come out ahead.

As someone with a pension, I read the paper and have bought in. I'm now 100% equities and plan on staying that way. Personally I'm 70/30 US/International. I believe in US "exceptionalism". You can't ignore the performance of the US market, so I am US-biased, but still have a chunk of international to stay somewhat diversified. Nobody knows the future, not even the "experts", so this is just my personal philosophy, right or wrong I'm sticking with it.

I took a deep dive into options trading a few years back. To be clear, I am a long-term, low-cost, index fund investor, but felt that I had the income to maybe dip my toes into options trading. I wasn't going to just jump in, I wanted to learn it and practice it before making my first actual trade. I used Think or Swim's trading simulator for about 2 years, read books, watched YT videos and kept practicing. At the end of those 2 years I concluded that it wasn't for me. I did not beat the market. I did not even keep pace with the market. It's a fool's errand. The .05% of the investors that win at options is not going to be YOU. These financial talking heads, and other posters on social media will make you believe that, but you are not special. I can see options trading ruining a lot of people's futures, especially people prone to addictive behavior.

I'm reaching the point where I'm starting to go from all equities into some bonds, roughly 10 years from retirement. Is gradually increasing my bond exposure more risky than just staying the course with equities? You say stocks are risky for the short term, and then you also say bonds are risky for inflation loss. Kind of sounds like there isn't a good answer, and you're potentially losing out either way.
