If you just change your oil every 5K, it doesn't really matter. An oil change for my Hemi (7 qts) costs less than $30 when I do it myself with cheap oil. Maybe I could stretch it further, but I don't care. That's not a good habit to get into. You'll never damage an engine by changing the oil too often.

@datsuntoyy It basically does go "aaahhhhh". I can physically feel and hear a difference when I change my oil.

@Olds_Pwr I’m not understanding what the benefit of changing viscosities would be. Knock yourself out with it if that’s what you want to do. In the old days you would do it when the seasons changed, but most cars take lightweight synthetic oil now, so there really is no point, synthetics took care of all the issues conventional oil used to have. Doesn’t break down under heat, and still flows in the cold.

@TassieLorenzo If a car doesn't have an oil dipstick, I'm not buying it, plain and simple. It was hard enough for me to buy my truck that doesn't have a transmission dipstick. That still bugs me to this day.

You're not really supposed to change viscosities lol. You put in what is recommended for the engine, nothing else.

@Olds_Pwr It's not "falling for" something. The engines are specifically designed to use a certain oil. Many modern engines have very narrow oil passages, thus need very light oils. Changing oils was fine on old cars, and people did that, but everything now needs very specific fluids and oils.

@Olds_Pwr All I’m saying is you’re supposed to use the recommended viscosity. You don’t have to buy the expensive brands, that’s not what I’m saying, but modern engines need very specific viscosities. Either you lucked out or have an older engine with a wider tolerance. Ask any mechanic worth his salt and he’ll tell you to not mess around with viscosity, use what the manual says. It’s also a good idea to find a favorite brand and stick with it.

You had me in the beginning but this video quickly went over my head. Interesting, but above my paygrade lol.

@ Did I say it made a big difference? It's a subtle difference that I can pick up on because I know my engine. Also, what do you think a "tune-up" is exactly? It's not 1965, there is no such thing as a "tune-up" anymore. Do you just get off on being a contrarian?

How many people were killed because of this?

The problem with my Ram is the filter location is so awkward, I would spill oil everywhere trying to contort my hand to get it screwed in. Anyone with a 4th gen Ram knows what I'm talking about.

I'll just stick to Supertech full synthetic. I'm not racing, I'm driving to work.

@gk5891 All that is great, but the average person is not making those calculations. 5K is a good interval to stick with for most modern vehicles, pretty much anything from 2000ish forward. Changing oil isn't difficult, it's one of the easiest things to do besides changing an air filter, anyone can do it. Buy cheap oil at discount prices, and change it frequently. You can't go wrong.

@DominiAeternum Why would you think that? When you own a vehicle for 10 years you notice the little things. My truck is in tip top shape because I change all my fluids on time every time.

I don't have any background in racing, so forgive me if this sounds like a stupid question, but why do you use carburetors in race engines vs. fuel injection?
