If you just change your oil every 5K, it doesn't really matter. An oil change for my Hemi (7 qts) costs less than $30 when I do it myself with cheap oil. Maybe I could stretch it further, but I don't care. That's not a good habit to get into. You'll never damage an engine by changing the oil too often.

@TassieLorenzo If a car doesn't have an oil dipstick, I'm not buying it, plain and simple. It was hard enough for me to buy my truck that doesn't have a transmission dipstick. That still bugs me to this day.

@gk5891 All that is great, but the average person is not making those calculations. 5K is a good interval to stick with for most modern vehicles, pretty much anything from 2000ish forward. Changing oil isn't difficult, it's one of the easiest things to do besides changing an air filter, anyone can do it. Buy cheap oil at discount prices, and change it frequently. You can't go wrong.
