@blake8297 For someone that doesn't work on vehicles, it's not exactly a straight-forward drain and fill. Most people that don't wrench on their vehicles are not going to do it. I agree, anyone can do it, but someone is going to see the process and get intimidated and just not do it.

It's crazy to me how some cars are. I can check just about everything on my truck, oil temp, oil pressure, transmission temperature, coolant temp, among other things. I guess they figure a majority of people don't even bother checking those things, and they're probably right, but that doesn't mean you omit the gauges. One of the many reasons I really hate the cars that have come out in the last 5 years.

@slagdemon It costs me $30 to change my own oil on my Ram which takes 7 quarts. $30. You don't know what you're talking about. On a small SUV or Sedan I could do it even cheaper, like $15-$20.

@adventureoflinkmk2 Not saying cars were perfect but at least they had dipsticks and things were vastly easier to service. Good luck trying to fix your own car today if it’s not an obvious problem.

Used oil is put to good use too, they use it for fueling large ships, which transports goods around the world. I'm sure they use it for many other applications, but that is one I know of.

1/2 ton pickups, cars and SUVs have all gone away from serviceable parts, they use bushings for everything now. There are no zerk fittings on my 1/2 ton. Heavy duty pickups I believe still have zerks though.

Cool to see these lists, but they don't really give you the big picture. Too many variables. The biggest of which you touched on in the end with Toyota/Lexus. Kia/Hyundais are disposable cars, and their price reflects that. Toyota/Lexus is a car you pass on to your kids and even your grandkids.

@Tallnerdyguy Yeah, it’s a little more involved than most fluid changes. You have to properly torque the new pan, and make sure you’re in the proper temperature window while adding fluid, while cycling through the gears. I personally don’t know where to find an official procedure, all I’ve found is tutorial videos on it.

There's certain vehicles you don't see up north anymore. An old Taurus is one of them. You can tell which vehicles were rust proofed, and which vehicles weren't. There are vehicles in the south that you never see up north anymore.

That's the exact combination I just bought, putting them on tomorrow. I know the Akebonos are good, but have never bought those rotors. It's one of the most well-known companies, and the price was right so I went with them. Hoping they're good.

5,000 miles with full synthetic, 4,000 miles with synthetic blend, 3,000 miles with conventional. Most people are using full synthetic these days, and 5,000 miles is not overkill and it's not overly expensive. I say 5,000 miles or 6 months, whatever comes first. Change your own freakin oil people. It's not hard. Buy cheap synthetic oil, like Supertech or Costco oil. I change oil for less than $30 in my 5.7 Hemi. On a car it would be like $20 or less.

I got suckered into buying one in 2017. The one time I tried using it, the claim was denied. Just keep that money and set it aside for future repairs. These companies are scummy. All of them. I don't know what I was thinking honestly, because I try to repair most things myself. They just caught me on an off day or something and I said why not, just add it onto the loan. Live and learn I guess.

@Luke.Skywodka It's not necessary, that's overkill. The transmission isn't bad either, it's made by ZF. They make a ton of transmissions for a lot of different automakers and brands. The fluid is very expensive, and changing it every 10,000 km would cost you the price of a brand new transmission in about 5 years.

@unikornkontroller Yeah, and people overpay for those POS's and I've heard countless stories of nightmare experiences trying to get their cars repaired if something goes wrong. Sometimes people don't have a car for several months waiting to get them fixed. Also, don't even get me started how crazy buying a used car at a place like Carvana is. Talk about rolling the dice. You can't even test drive the things.

@unikornkontroller I don’t particularly care for car salesmen, but I don’t see anything changing. Some states have laws that basically make it illegal to sell cars any other way. I’m not sure how Tesla gets around them, but dealerships are pretty entrenched.

That car is horrible. How could you let a car get that bad? Even if you could get it back in decent mechanical order, I wouldn't sit in that thing. Nasty. Just not worth the work it would take to fix that interior. I don't understand people that don't do basic cleaning and maintenance on a vehicle. It doesn't have to be showroom floor quality, but vacuum it out and wipe things down once in a while. What a slob.

@slagdemon As long as the oil has all the proper certifications, it's perfectly fine to use for an everyday driver. I don't use Fram, but I use much cheaper filters than $16, hell the Mopar filters are cheaper than that, and the Walmart filters are perfectly fine for 5,000 miles.

@Brian-R Supertech isn’t garbage oil, that’s been proven. If you find it on sale you absolutely can change it around $30. It’s better to change cheap oil more often than go 10,000 on expensive oil. You do you, but you’re wrong.

As far as the Ram oil change interval, it just states in the owners manual not to exceed 10,000 miles under normal driving conditions. Let me tell you, most modern driving conditions are on congested roads with stop and go traffic and excess idling. Almost nobody falls under normal driving conditions, especially not truck owners. I would not exceed 5,000 miles, and I would use full synthetic, not the synthetic blend that most dealers will put in it if you take it in for service. Mine is almost 7 years old and does not burn a drop of oil. Those consumption rates you listed were ridiculous!

What a piece of junk car. This guy got hosed. A brand new Nissan is bad enough, but a used one that has been in an accident? That dealership should be ashamed of selling this POS for what they sold it for, but I know they're not. That phone call was infuriating.
