I think home ownership comes out on top in the long, long term. By then you're probably financially secure anyways so it doesn't really matter all that much. He is right that it's more of a lifestyle decision. I choose not to pay someone else's mortgage and have a place I can call my own, not to mention customize it to what I want it to be. Financially, renting vs. buying are probably a wash.
