  16. After the sudden chase, the young leopardess spent hours up the tree, too traumatized and scared to get down. In her short life, she had already seen many of her kind get chased and even killed by these ruthless, bigger cats, but she never imagined it would one day happen to her. She wondered if one day, all of this would change. Her thoughts were interrupted by a scent in the air: the scent of death. The lions had claimed another victim. At first she couldn't tell what the scent was, but a few quick whiffs later and she realized that it was a familiar scent. Her heart nearly stopped beating as she came to the conclusion of what happened. In a flash, she jumped off the tree and landed on the ground, her thick pads absorbing the impact, and she raced towards the scent, hoping that it's not too late. When she finally arrived at the Acacia forest, her worst nightmare was lying right in front of her: lying motionless on the ground, blood dripping from her punctured throat, was none other than the leopardess's mother. Even though she was weaned and could hunt on her own, the young leopardess still felt love towards her mother, the one who nurtured her, protected her and loved her when no one else did. Seeing her body, lifeless and destroyed by the lions, filled her with grief, shock and terror. She was too busy mourning that she didn't notice at first that her mother was actually still alive, but barely. The lions savaged her and tore her body to shreds but didn't kill her for some reason. The young leopardess nuzzled her dying mother, who was too weak and in too much pain to nuzzle her baby girl back, even though she really wanted to. With her dying breath, the mother leopardess gave a final request to her daughter: "My sweet girl, you are far stronger than you think you are. You are capable of huge, huge things. If, some day, you get the chance to put those lions in their place and show them the pain and fear they've given us all these years, just, do it. And if you feel like you can't, remember... that... I'll always be.... with...... you..... within......" As she uttered this last word, she tried in vain to lift her paw to gently stroke her daughter's face one last time, but her paw fell limp and hit the ground. The life left her eyes. She was gone. Her heart filled with grief and despair, the young leopardess wailed into the air, screaming and yowling in pain at the death of her mother. As tears rolled down her cheeks and plopped to the ground, forming tiny mud puddles in the dirt below her, she snapped. She looked over to the North, where the lions had their den. With a look of pure rage and hatred in her eyes, she slowly trudged towards the lion's den, with the intention of honoring her late mother and making the lion's lives an absolute nightmare... WTF kind of dark fanfic have I just written!?!? 😳
