The buffalos were grazing peacefully that sunny day. As the melodious song of the birds, the buzzing of the flies and the feint whispering of the African breeze filled the air, the buffalos continued to chew their meal without a care in the world. Suddenly, they all raised their heads and stood alert; they could smell something. Something deadly was approaching. The buffalos couldn't tell what it was, for their eyesight is mediocre, and their stalkers were well hidden anyway. But as the danger got closer and closer, the buffalos could properly identify the smell: the smell of death. The smell that every buffalo fears since they're in the womb. The lead bull quickly shouts the one word every buffalo dreads hearing: "Lions!" As soon as he finishes mooing his warning, the big cats spring out of the bushes. Armed with razor-sharp claws and powerful bone-crunching jaws with teeth as deadly as a serial killer's knife, the lions had only one thing in mind: kill. The buffalos ran for their lives. "Protect the children!"- screamed a female buffalo. The calves wailed and cried, fearing that their short lives would soon be over. Suddenly, the lead bull yelled firmly: "Boys! The safety of our next generation is our top priority! Defensive formation! As we rehearsed! Double time! Tenhut!" As soon as they heard their leader, the buffalo soldiers quickly surrounded the calves, using their horns and their own bulk to protect the younger ones. The lions closed in, but they stopped, unwilling to penetrate such a dangerous barrier. The buffalos continued to run, and they made it to a steep hill. With the cats hot on their tail, the buffalos had no choice but to climb the treacherous cliff. One slip would spell doom for the buffalos, as their legs could break and leave them at the mercy of the barbaric felines. But the buffalos didn't give up, and they trudged up the incline one by one. It seemed that the buffalos have escaped, but a moo of despair suddenly filled the air. It was the oldest member of the herd; an ancient bull named Old Leatherhide. The old bull was dangling from the cliff; his leg hanging inches from the lion's teeth. He tried his damnest to get up, but his old age has made him frail and tired. Suddenly, a lion jumped on his back. "Help me!"- screamed Old Leatherhide. As the lion tried to sink its teeth into his neck, Old Leatherhide closed his eyes, ready to accept his fate. But suddenly, charging in from behind all the dust, the lead bull and his soldiers charged at the lions, saving the old bull. "Grandfather, are you all right?"- asked the concerned leader. "Yes, my grandson, thanks to you."- replied Old Leatherhide, extremely proud of his grandson and his bravery and leadership. The old bull joined his grandson up the hill, where the entire herd faced their feline adversaries. The lions halted in their tracks; the buffalos had the high ground, and the lions did NOT underestimate their power. Without a second thought, the cats retreated, leaving the buffalos to celebrate their victory in peace. As the herd continued to graze, Old Leatherhide was resting under a tree next to his grandson. "I always knew you would be a good leader."- said the aging bull. His grandson was flattered and he nuzzled his grandfather as they continued watching over their people, on high alert as always, for Kruger was full of many dangers...
