Kings Building Capital Ships for Prestige …..? That must go back to King Ugg and Floating Logy thingy….. Hail Ugg ….!!!!!! …Nowadays we are civilized and name ours for Former Presidents ……
1
If you Really want to Demoralize you enemy with radio transmissions... play Buck Owens saddest songs ...nonstop ...
1
@abrahamlincoln9758 kinda like Rickover
1
@Nipplator99999999999 The song is Ain’t we got love ? Correct ?
1
Speaking of Eric Brown…… I’m sure Drach has an episode planned for covering his career and those thousands of carrier landings… and help this bewildered American understand why.. he wasn’t Knighted …? I guess he was just doing his duty … bravely , skillfully and Incredibly well ..
1
I Hope The USS Saratoga Had Towing Insurance … Because Emergency Roadside Assistance Fees for a 25,000 ton plus the flooding … ship…. In a Combat Zone ? Expensive …
1
Especially when water gets involved …!
1
@Drachinifel as Shackleton said …”never the lowered banner .. never the last endeavor…! “
1
@AptMantis2278 The present crisis is taking up a lot of my otherwise historical viewing time ..
1
Drydock # 1 mentioned the Whitehead Torpedo …. and just gotta know more … Was the Oskerborg Fortress equipped with the cable type or some other variety …. and what was its developmental history and early adoption by various navy’s, as each country branched out into different designs …Many Thanks
1
@johngori9477 yep
1
The cargo sun also evolved into the special operations and commando sub in WW2
1
Guadalcanal was the Decisive Battle disguised as the Decisive Campaign…. Thanks Drach for a excellent series ….
1
A Nuclear Armed Destroyer .. ? Well I guess it’s worth a Turret or Two …
1
Fast Battle Cruiser Ships .. ?
1
It’s my annual rewatch of Episodes … The F-4 Skyray has no flying examples.. such an injustice.. while not on the same level as USS Enterprise or HMS Warspite … still a shame just on ascetics alone .. not to mention all those records
1
That ones one my list .. I have to finish Neptune’s Inferno
1
@kemarisite the Ward had an interesting service career…what with the first shots and first kill of the war not bad for an old ship … had a action packed second life as an APD … plus an ironic sinking ..it’s real classic story of Wartime Modifications ..
1
Decisive Battles …. They were only off by one letter….. and then awaking a sleeping giant and millions of angered American Samari
1
I’m not sure which is scarier being on top of those lattice masts or one those AA platforms ...it probably was impossible to hit anything from a swaying platform 100 feet in the air ..?
1
Thanks Drachinifel for another Episode …! I would like to please ask about Cannon Rifling .. and the history and development of … however that is probably a forthcoming episode.. so as a back up question..Thornycroft had a reputation for building top shelf destroyers .. how did they do it ..?
1
@kennethdeanmiller7324 oops 😬..spelling is my Achilles Heel
1
Whenever a new technology gets developed the first generation or two seem to have teething problems… and there is shock and consternation among the Brass and the Politicians … even now as with our Aluminum Littoral Ships … but I’m sure it goes back to the first sharpened stick … Oh that thing ? … it will never go anywhere…..
1
@pincopallino6765 if you don’t have control of the seas around and to your home waters your probably not in any position to go to war in the first place…?
1
@pincopallino6765 it was a close run thing both times … but when your relying on a new weapon only …don’t be surprised when the enemy develops countermeasures …going to war against the worlds largest navy plus colony’s may not be the best idea ….
1
Now there is a story of Wartime innovation and conversion and desperation…!
1
Probably the coolest part of being at sea is watching the bow cutting through the ocean … and the bow of an Aircraft Carrier is impressive especially from 90 feet up on the catwalk … when the sea is glassy smooth
1
They must have carved the word Revenge on every timber and plank and mast and sail .. because she sure did get hers ...was the keel made from the vengeance oak ..?
1
The Japanese Ships Bows were quite unique .. and each nation seemed to favor different types ..The history of ships bow is quite a lengthy subject as it goes back to Ugg and his floaty log thingy …
1
Thank you Drach ..!
1
Looks like a big version of a Schnell Boat ... Hopefully a forthcoming episode ... ? The SBoats Really caused a disproportionate amount of trouble ... akin to the Mosquito both were fast wooden, versatile , and disputatious...
1
Ex Tenibres Lux is now my Mantra / Credo / Bumper Sticker /Fundamental Underlying Premise !
1
@kemarisite The 1000lb bombs on the Forestall were from ww2 and they cooked off way too soon ….I forget who… but one of the officers didn’t want to bring them onboard from the ammunition ship ..But most Munitions have a sell by date …. So it kinda explains why we blow up some county ever 20-30 years …
1
In the bang for yourASW buck category ... I think the winner is the flower class ...? What’s your opinion ?
1
The Avant Garde of the Under Water …. Proves how much trouble a small group of brave men doing the unexpected in new ways really can be …. Thanks for this great story …!
1
Torpedoes.. Cannons …Aircraft…. Did they install a wine cellar …?
1
Understood , Empathy is one tough opponent, I cried about the horrible loss of life . I served on the flight deck of the USS Forestall and when one of your shipmates goes missing at sea it leaves you with a lifetime of questions !
1
@evensgrey Exactly plus Foils are delicate… great if your on a Kite Board or small dingy … our Carrier routinely visited Naples Italy and they had those ferry’s zipping around on their Foils going to Capri .. but their is no way your getting a 60,000 ton carrier up on a Foil … yet … but even those new Zumwalt class are a big disappointment… plus they corrode to pieces … besides when your at sea the coolest thing is to go forward and watch the bow cutting trough the ocean ..
1
In true Dickensonian style ....the Ghost of Yorktown Past came to Haunt the IJN
1
@kemarisite the p38 had real problems … low Mach limits and the roll rate of a whale … they had to install five flaps and aileron boosters which took a while … the FW 190 would have eaten it for breakfast
1
Indeed … I think he was one of the greatest pilots of all time … He could have broken the sound barrier first ..
1
I’m off to the Bookstore .... !
1
And once you build it … what ever you do …. Don’t name it Kamchatka … or Blucher…
1
Does the Kiwi’s Flair For Rugby and Sailing enter into The Equation … ?
1
Mahan’s point about the ratio of coastline to Landmass … and a divided coastline “Russia “ … is maybe one of those points that seem self evident … but he is trying to explain Naval Strategy to Landlubbers … I’m guessing Japan had the highest and Britain was Second … but fractal geometry would have to get involved on that calculation..
1
@SYH653 Touché… A rotating Binocular magazine .. with a few ready use nearby ..and runners ..
1
Admiral Nelson would be proud ! Closer ever closer
1
Please do make a return trip … and your opinion and top 5 Tank Destroyers .. and the Amphibious truck DUKW sounds like a fun ride … sea state permitting
1
@AndrewTBP it seems like someone should be making a fresh run of DUKWs .. they might come in handy in Ukraine 🇺🇦 and for humanitarian missions.. I know that I want one.. a DUKW in every garage ..!
1
That French Dreadnought was the Froi Gras of Naval Design ... God Awful ... and you probably didn’t want to see it getting made ..
