I served aboard the USS Forrestal in 81 .. She had suffered catastrophic damage in 68 due to badly degraded 1000 lb bombs …Only the heroic action of the crew saved her …. as she was brand new ship , that was the deciding factor in her being rebuilt vrs scrapped ..I’m sure throughout history this wasn’t the first time such an incident happened..
