Russia was cornered by NATO's relentless march to encircle Russia, tried its best to negotiate with the US and NATO for a security architecture that could be acceptable to all, but was ignored and had to speak in the only dialect the West understands. Washington did not accept Cuba's sovereign decision to have Soviet military presence on its soil that would be understood as a threat to America... Why did the West expect Russia to welcome American-led NATO military presence at its doorstep in Ukraine? Russian action was 100% legitimate in their national security interests. If Nikita Khrushchev and Kennedy did not reach an agreement to remove Soviet weapons, Cuba would have ended up like Ukraine. Would it have been an "illegal" war as well?
