If you have the time.
Massacres like this from start to finish (suicide of the gunman) are over in less than 5-8 minutes on average, thats why a AR-15 is the gun of choice, high cap magazines, 30 round capacity, or more, in a average clip, accurate shot placement (not that it matters with a semi or auto rifle), two handed operation, incredibly high fire rate with minor modifications, like bump stocks, or a kit off of the internet.
The big plus seems to be the killing power of the AR-15 that a inexperienced shooter wouldn't otherwise have with a hand gun.
This isn't Hollywood and that guy wasn't John Wick.
To be effective with a hand gun, well you need to practice.

Well, I did say with mods.
You can indeed convert a AR to full auto (illegal of course, dont do it) capable just with kits off the internet, instructions and all.
However, the point is, that the AR is a lot more efficient than a hand gun to a inexperienced or shooter of little experience.
Though, in this kind of case, you only get one chance, then no more chances for improvement.
Learning on the job only works once.
Sorry, bad joke.
Or maybe it has a better(?) reputation .
Geeze...I cant believe that
I am discussing this subject this way.
Sorry, cant continue...have to go get a shower.
Till the next time.

In reference to your comment about a 9mm hollow point being a better round in close quarters, than a .223, my rebuttal is that there are reports comming out, that those children were so torn to pieces, that they had to use DNA from the familys, to match bodys to parts.
No 9mm hand gun, hollow point or not, close quarters or not, dismembers, decapitates, cuts a torso in half.
The .223 is clearly the superior round for close quarters.
