  3. Climate has changed since then. There is only 3 month's of REALLY cold weather. Russian winters are not running in the -°40 degree in October thru March anymore, except it the far northern arctic latitudes. Some of the shipping ports and some shipping lanes in the Black Sea aren't ice locked in the winter anymore. Heck the Northwest Passage in the Arctic Circle is open and passable till almost almost January. 80 years of climate change has made a big difference.
