  1. It was a good idea for the people who were responsible for the decisions. They got rich (well, even richer) for it. That the Puerto Rican people as a whole were screwed is not something that the sociopaths cared about.

  3. They've had more votes since then, and the last two times had statehood win. Though the most recent vote had low turnout due to boycotts by the anti-statehood groups.

  4.  @Anabel30100  In 2012, 61.2% voted for statehood. In 2017, it was 97.2% for statehood. Yes, basically everybody who opposes statehood "boycotted" the 2017 referendum, but that's not how elections work. Refusing to show up and vote does not constitute a "no" vote.

  5.  Rich Garcia  50 years ago, or better yet 100 years ago, Puerto Rico should've been granted independence. But as it stands right now, only a small minority of Puerto Ricans want independence. Maybe that's a mistake on their part. Maybe Puerto Rico would be better off independent. But that's for the Puerto Rican people as a whole to decide. If the majority wants to become a US state, they should be allowed to do so.
