I completely disagree with you on that, Drew. There's no valid reason for churches to be automatically tax-exempt. And lots of churches are plainly operating as for-profit entities. The notion that it would cost too much money to collect taxes from them makes no sense. It's on the same level as how Republicans have slashed the IRS's budget it order to force it to give up on the tax evasion by the ultra-rich. Which naturally resulted in a huge loss of tax revenue.

@DrewSorensenMusic I haven't had any bad experiences with churches, but there absolutely are lots of them that operate on a for-profit basis. Just look at all those "mega-churches". Whether a church gets tax-exempt status should have nothing to do with it being a church. It should be entirely about whether it's a legitimate non-profit entity. A church that's collecting money only for charitable purposes and its own upkeep should still get tax-exempt status, so long as it obeys the same laws as every other charity. But a church that's specifically enriching its owners (like the megachurches, and scam cults like the "Church" of Scientology)? Those should have to pay taxes like any other for-profit business does. It's not the IRS's place to decide who is and isn't a religion, and thus it should be how a church operates rather than what it believes that determines whether it's a tax-exempt non-profit.
