The thing to remember is that Britain is also actually better off for having lost their empire after World War II. Even from a purely self-interested standpoint, if (as was the case for most British people) you didn't care about the impact on the indigenous people who had been colonized, by the 1940s basically every colony other than India was a financial drain on Britain rather than a source of wealth extraction.
