Neither NYC nor Sweden is even close to herd immunity. Herd immunity would require at least 70% of the population to be immune. For NYC to have herd immunity that would require over 5.8 million people in the city to have been infected (we have 6.8 million confirmed cases nationwide BTW). The actual number has been about 451,000. Even if we go with a very low-end estimate of mortality and say 1%, herd immunity for NYC would involve 58,000 deaths. A more realistic 3% mortality would mean 174,000 deaths. In NYC alone. That's why going for "herd immunity" without a vaccine is insane. And that's before we even get into the fact that immunity after being infected is only temporary. Within a few months, you'll be vulnerable again. It's also ignoring the fact about 20% of COVID survivors have significant permanent lung damage.

@whyamimrpink78 Is that study based on antibody tests? Because those tests were found months ago to have extremely high false positive rates.

Dan James They didn't. Sweden doesn't have herd immunity. Nor was that a goal of their strategy. They gambled on the idea that their population density is low and that social distancing is already part of Swedish culture. And the result is that they've been significantly harder hit than Norway and Finland, which have extremely similar demographics, population density, and healthcare quality. That pretty well indicates that Sweden's "no lockdowns" strategy was the wrong one. Also, yes of course China is lying about their numbers. So are multiple US states, like Texas and Florida. Not much we can do about that. We can only use the data we actually have.
