  1.  @SouthernGentleman  John Brown took an arsenal for the purpose of arming the slaves so they could rebel and free themselves. Ending slavery was his entire goal. Lee was a slave owner, and a particularly brutal one at that. Fighting for Virginia was fighting for slavery, because Virginia's secession was entirely about slavery.
