  2.  @sherlockholmes6990  I do count Byzantium. When the empire divided into eastern and western halves, the east was richer and more populous. Think of it like if after the Civil War, the southern states had never been reintegrated but instead had been left to do their own thing as 11 smaller countries. The United States would continue to exist, just like the Roman Empire continued to exist without Rome. (In fact, even in the Western Roman Empire, Rome was no longer even the capital at the time of its fall.)
