@Grayg The referendum was scheduled before COVID existed. And FLNKS wanted to use COVID as an excuse to delay a referendum they knew they would lose. By December 2021 when the referendum happened, New Caledonia had high vaccination rates and plummeting infection rates.

@de_Voux The majority of the New Caledonia population wants to remain with France.

@malehumanperson7901 England doesn't get to prohibit Scotland from holding another referendum. At some point, Scotland will just declare independence without asking for England's permission.
5
@de_Voux Should people whose families have lived there since the 19th century not get voting rights?
4
@adamfarmer7665 That's because Turkey has been carrying out an illegal military occupation of Northern Cyprus for 50 years.

The Ministry of the Overseas is responsible for all of France's overseas departments, collectivities, and territories, not just New Caledonia. (The overseas departments have identical status to the departments of metropolitan France, the collectivities have semi-autonomous status, and the territories are uninhabited islands.) By far the most populous part of Overseas France is Réunion with a population of 900k. While New Caledonia with a population of 270k is the 7th largest.

@Pizza23333 1. Who says it's against the wishes of the majority of Scottish people? 2. Shut it out of EU membership? Being in the UK shuts Scotland out of EU membership.

@tancreddehauteville764 You're assuming they want "autonomy" and separation from France.
3
@tancreddehauteville764 They might disagree with your about being "not French".

Yes. It was named by British explorer James Cook in 1774. France didn't take control until 1853.
3
Yes, colonial empires like Russia should be disassembled entirely.
2
Regardless of whether the people living there want to be "let go" from France?
2
Russia is the imperial one. And the Russian-backed military juntas in Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso are not reprsentative of the people.
2
@de_Voux Its unification into a single country is a recent development, but the concept of India (Bharat) as a distinct cultural region has existed for thousands of years. Saying that India is artificial makes about as much sense as saying that Europe is artificial.
1
It's very unlikely that the Caldoche will want independence.
1
3:23 In reality, it was boycotted because the pro-independence side knew they'd lose a 3rd referendum in a row, so they wanted to delegitimize the referendum. Also, saying that the deal "collapsed" implies that FLNKS has veto power over it. They don't.
1
@danielprw512 If the people wanted those juntas, they wouldn't have needed to seize power in military coups.
