Yep, the only difference is that the new colonizers like to claim they're anti-colonialist.
60
@chingron "Sadly"? Trump himself is demonstrating why electing a "populist" is such a bad idea.
30
@nonhlanhlashezi9403 Zuma is one of the rich guys ruining your country. The only black South African he actually prioritizes is himself. Just because he says he's looking out for your interests doesn't make it true.
14
user-ii2lm6kg2g Just because China claims something doesn't make it true. Tibet wasn't even part of China until China conquered it in 1951.
13
@annaairahala9462 Yeah, I think it's very likely that if a more "normal" conservative had been the leader, the Conservatives would've eked out a narrow victory. Even with the Trump factor. But with PP being so Trumpian himself, that wasn't going to happen.
10
@jager6863 No, it was not. All of those "warm periods" were colder than the modern day. And humans have a massive impact on the climate.
10
The question is, would Nigeria allow them to do this? Nigeria is much more powerful both economically and militarily than Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso combined. And at some point, they're likely to decide that sanctions are insufficient and intervene militarily to overthrow the juntas.
9
Of course he can't. The President has no power over it. And the fact that various European countries don't have birthright citizenship is completely immaterial. It's the Constitution of the United States that matters for US law. What Germany allows or does not allow is irrelevant.
9
@Unpopular_0pinion I doubt the 90 independent candidates (who got less than 10 votes apiece) had any impact on that riding's outcome.
9
@jcomandante6629 And they'd almost certainly lose that autonomy in an independent Mindanao.
8
Trump caves and then claims he won. That's his entire life.
8
@ryanwalters6184 News flash, MAGA. All of the people who think they are better than you? We all are better than you.
8
@BrotherHood-xh9sg "Left wing view" being how the right describes anything involving actual fact-based reporting.
7
user-ii2lm6kg2g Tibet was a vassal state to the Qing dynasty, but was not part of the Republic of China. And thus was not "inherited" by the People's Republic of China. Hence the PRC needing to invade Tibet to annex it.
7
user-ii2lm6kg2g No, Tibet was not "always" part of China. Tibet was a vassal state to the Qing, but fully independent after the Republic of China was established in 1912. Also, it's cute how you recognize every dynasty from Xia onward as being "China", but pretend that none of the historical Indian empires were "India". But I suppose if not for double standards, you'd have no standards at all.
7
No it isn't. 41% approval rating, 53% disapproval.
7
@carloshidalgo92 Old colonial maps are irrelevant. The fact that it used to be under Spanish rule doesn't grant any claim to Venezuela.
6
@handsfortoothpicks Look at Russia to see what Russian imperialism results in. 90% of Russian territory is actually colonies.
6
@GreatDino1130 No there wasn't. What actually happened in Amsterdam was a riot by Israeli football hooligans.
6
Fujimori might as well be a clone of her father.
5
That's how it always works with the right. Every accusation is actually a confession.
5
He also never mentioned Marcos Jr's nickname "Bongbong". Maybe it's less hilarious to Filipinos, but to an America's ears...
4
@mageproductions827 Much harder to kick out a country that's already a member than to prevent another autocracy from joining.
4
A slight rebound based on wishful thinking. The "90 day pause" isn't going change anything in the long term, and the recession is already coming (possibly already begun).
3
@Srbenda126 Is it actually a "reasonable compromise" for India to let China keep what they stole, and in return...China merely promises not to steal any more of India's land?
3
@thunar33 Everything you said is complete nonsense.
3
Nero was near the beginning of the Roman Empire. It lasted for another thousand years.
3
@SusCalvin FDR wasn't actually the first to go against that tradition. He was simply the first to succeed in being elected to a third (and then fourth) term. The first to try was Ulysses S. Grant. He didn't run for reelection to a 3rd term in 1876, but came back four years later and ran in 1880, but finished second for the Republican nomination. And Grover Cleveland ran for reelection to a 3rd term in 1896, but failed to get the Democratic nomination. And of course, in 1912, Theodore Roosevelt ran for a 3rd term as a 3rd-party candidate after failing to win the Republican nomination.
3
Also, Trump is too stupid to realize that a "trade deficit" is not a bad thing.
3
The alternative is to not impose idiotic tariffs based on a delusional idea that "trade deficits" are a problem.
3
@cam_hammer He's objectively not.
3
The one way it makes sense is if Trump is deliberately destroying America. Anything else is just sanewashing. The reality is that "trade deficits" aren't a problem in the first place, so trying to "fix" them is stupid.
3
@PepeCoinMania The Minsk agreements are to Ukraine what the Convention of Peking was to China in the 19th century: one-sided "agreements" imposed at gunpoint by Russia to undermine their sovereignty. Russia's invasion of Ukraine began in 2014, before the Minsk agreements were even conceived of, let alone signed.
3
@realScottThomas NATO never did say they won't expand eastward toward Russia. No matter how many times Russia repeats that lie, it will still remain a lie. What NATO agreed to was not expanding into East Germany. And even now, NATO still scrupulously abides by that agreement. NATO never operates in the former East Germany.
3
No, it was not remotely OK. Turkey has been oppressing the Kurds for decades. And yes, Israel's claim to be defending the Druze is very dubious.
3
@AfroVersity No, it is western democracy that caused all these problems around Africa. It's western monarchism that did so.
3
As usual for Rapeublicans, it's all about the racism.
3
And the dollar is becoming less stable.
3
@a.maskil9073 It's not that Poilievre was "submissive to Trump", it's that he wants to be Trump. He wanted to bring the same kind of policies to Canada that Trump is implementing in the USA right now.
2
@ronaldmcdonald6067 He lost his own riding. A riding which hadn't elected a Liberal since 1963. Yes, it's very safe to say that Poilievre is the biggest loser.
2
Trump is too stupid to even understand that "trade deficits" and "budget deficits" are completely separate things.
2
@gorillaeggs8199 It's a blatantly obvious fact. The US is currently spending 3.4% of GDP on defense. Even if a majority of US defense spending were focused on the Atlantic and Europe (which it very obviously is not; the Pacific and Asia has been the primary US defense focus for some time now), that would still be less than 2%.
2
@MirceaIliePloscaru No. Sales taxes are not tariffs.
2
@ThatGuy-bz2in And Alberta acts like they're entitled to have a Conservative government in Ottawa. That it's somehow unfair that they ever get outvoted by the more populous provinces.
2
@ryanwalters6184 You don't have any friends, MAGAt. "America First" is actually destroying America.
2
And yet, simply because Trump is rich, millions of blithering idiots think that he must be an expert on the economy.
2
@segiraldovi No, it does not harm the average citizen. Higher taxes "harms" the wealthy elites, maybe. But not very much, because they're still the wealthy elites.
2
Another similarity with Russia: Venezuela violated the Geneva Agreement less than a year after agreeing to it, by invading and occupying Ankoko Island and occupying it. For almost 60 years now.
2
@JSM-bb80u What. There is absolutely nothing wrong having a "trade deficit". If a country imports more than it exports, that's simply a sign that the country is rich.
2
@ I'm confused about who exactly he's saying thought it was okay for Turkey to invade and attack the Kurds.
