Denmark has already agreed to give them independence whenever they want it. They'd get no such thing as a US territory. And yes, $1 million would be a tiny amount of money for such a downgrade in status.

  23. Greenland is likely to declare independence within the next few years. But they're not going to downgrade themselves afterward by becoming a US territory. And no, statehood is not going to happen. 2 Senators and 1 Representative for 56,000 people (less population than the average small town in the US) is comical. Especially since the US has been refusing to grant statehood to Puerto Rico (with a population of over 3 million, larger than 18 states) despite the majority of the PR population demanding it for decades now. If annexed by the US, Greenland would be a mere territory, and thus be governed completely at the whims of DC. And that's precisely why they'll never agree to it. They don't want to trade one foreign master for another, even more remote and unresponsible foreign master.

  32. The Texas example actually proves you wrong. It went straight from independent republic to statehood. Yes, that would be difficult to get through Congress, but so would a treaty to annex them. Remember, a treaty requires 67 votes in the Senate.
