@snakewithnolegs Livyatan is literally the Hebrew word for Leviathan. And they wanted to name this whale "Leviathan melvillei". But the genus name Leviathan had already been used, so it wasn't available.

@Ninja1Ninja2 Orcas taking down great whites is fairly rare, and seems to be a recent phenomenon that only a few pods engage in. A pod of livyatan certainly could have teamed up to take down a megalodon, but it probably wouldn't have been common either. The norm for predators of similar size is that they leave each other alone unless one of them is desperately hungry. Predators know what's easy prey and what's a difficult fight, and try to avoid to the latter. Just because one large predator can take down the other large predator doesn't mean they'll come out unscathed in the process. The thing about orcas is that they're exceptionally intelligent even by whale standards. Which likely results in some of them deliberately taking on harder prey because the challenge excites them, similar to the reason why human big game hunters do it.
