This is why it was a mistake for Democrats to agree to that budget deal. Not only was it a bad budget that basically gave Republicans what they wanted and got nothing in return, it also prevented any government shutdowns from happening this year. As is obvious from the fact that Republicans are going for the debt ceiling shenanigans again, they WOULD have shut down the government again too if given the opportunity. And even though a government shutdown is far less damaging than a debt default would be, a shutdown is also much easier for low-information voters to understand. Having another government shutdown, this time during an election year, might well have been enough for Democrats to take back the House, even WITH all the massive gerrymandering in Republicans' favor. Republicans causing a debt default would probably do that as well, but it would also result in an economic catastrophe. And in the end, Republicans will back down if their bluff is called. They got NOTHING out of their previous attempt at debt ceiling brinksmanship, after all.
