  25. A republic is simply a nation that's not a monarchy. There's no requirement that a republic be remotely democratic. North Korea is a republic, and it's a totalitarian dictatorship. Iran is a republic, and its elected government is entirely subordinate to an unelected oligarchy of religious leaders. China is a republic, and clearly, no democracy there.
