  3. Republicans WOULD make homosexuality illegal again if given the opportunity, though. They think Lawrence v. Texas was wrongly decided, and that states should be able to ban homosexuality as they see fit.

  4. Thus making it "separate but equal". Which never turns out to be actually equal. Under your proposal, straight couples would get marriage while gay couples would get "civil unions" that allegedly offer the same legal rights. In practice, I have little doubt that marriages would continue to be given preferential treatment over civil unions.
