The first-generation dreadnoughts were HMS Dreadnought herself and the other early dreadnoughts with similar firepower (ie a broadside of 8 guns and caliber no greater than 12"). Second-generation dreadnoughts were an incremental improvement with 10 to 12 gun broadsides, and tended to have improved armor and/or all-centerline turret layout. Super-dreadnoughts had a significant increase in size and gun caliber of 13.5" or larger. Then there were the second-generation super-dreadnoughts, which continued the upward trend in size and carried 15" or 16" guns. As to why they were called super-dreadnoughts? The first of them, HMS Orion, was 25% heavier than HMS Dreadnought, and the bigger guns resulted in her weight of broadside (the combined shell weight from a single salvo) being 80% greater. And to illustrate just how fast these advances were happening, Orion was laid down 4 years and 1 month after Dreadnought.
