  1. ​ @stevevalley7835  The 37mm M4 uses a much smaller 37x145mm cartridge, compared to the M1's 37x223mm. This resulted in a lower muzzle velocity and lower range compared to the M1. And if the M1 had been adopted instead of the 40mm Bofors, that makes the M4 instead of the Oerlikon even less likely, because the same ship having to stock two different sizes of 37mm ammo and make sure they never get mixed up and sent to the wrong gun batteries is a logistical disaster waiting to happen.
