They did in fact have the Imperial Japanese Marines, though they were purely a part of the Navy rather than an affiliated by separate service like the USMC. Meanwhile, the Imperial Japanese Army also had its own "Marine Corps" in the form of the Amphibious Brigades.

I'm still wondering how Mutsu was ever on the chopping block for the Washington Naval Treaty in the first place. You say she wasn't quite ready for service, but that's not actually true. She was commissioned on October 24, 1912. The Washington Naval Conference didn't begin until 3 weeks later, on November 12, 1921. Only ships that weren't yet in commission were supposed to be halted. The Japanese delegation probably should've taken a tougher stance, telling the Americans "Mutsu is already in service, we won't scrap her, and you get nothing in exchange for that. Deal with it or we walk out without signing your treaty."

Another place where you could look for craters caused by USS New Jersey would be in the Beqaa Valley, Lebanon. Unfortunately that's another place that's not considered safe to visit, only slightly less dangerous than Iraq.
