  2. A Des Moines-class would annihilate a Deutschland-class. Faster, better armored, more firepower, and better fire control.

I have no idea how much it would cost to basically gut these ships in between the turrets and give them modern engines (even aside from operating costs, there are few if any people left in the Navy with the expertise to operate and repair conventional steam turbines), modern computers and automation, etc. It wouldn't have been cheap; we're talking about a much more extensive rebuild than the Iowas got in the 1980s.

  4. We tried something a bit like that with the Zumwalts. And in true Pentagon fashion, they ended up with ammo so expensive it wasn't actually any more cost-effective than missiles. And somehow managed to make the guns incapable of firing cheap conventional shells.

  5. Yes, Salem played the role of Graf Spee in The Battle of the River Plate. While HMS Cumberland and INS Delhi (ex-HMNZS Achilles) played themselves. Oddly Delhi wasn't used to also play the role of HMS Ajax, instead the not even remotely similar-looking HMS Sheffield was used. While HMS Exeter was played by HMS Jamaica. Meaning that in the movie, Exeter was smaller than Ajax.

  6.  @bkjeong4302  While the rate of fire would be far faster than an Iowa, the weight of explosives being delivered would be 1,923 lbs per minute for Des Moines compared to 2,765 lbs for Iowa. Bigger, heavier shells contain bigger, heavier bursting charges. An Iowa also had the ability to fire much further inland, 41,622 yards vs 29,800 yards. That said, there would be times where a larger number of smaller shells would be more useful. It allows for spreading the fire over a larger area, or attacking multiple separate targets at once if needed.

  7. Even a captain as incompetent as D'Oyly-Hughes surely wouldn't have allowed his ship to be boarded and captured. Glorious would've been scuttled if any attempt to capture her had been made.
