  1. Unfortunately for Spee, he didn't have Lando Calrissian on hand to convince him to charge in closer. Because literally the only chance he had of any of his squadron surviving, let alone winning, was if he could get his armored cruisers into the harbor entrance before the battlecruisers could raise steam. Scharnhorst and Gneisenau were doomed regardless, but if they could've gotten into the harbor entrance, Invincible and Inflexible would've been vulnerable to their guns at that range. And once Spee's ships were inevitably sunk anyway, they would still be blocking the (now-damaged) British battlecruisers from leaving.
