  1.  @scottdrone-silvers5179  Having an empire also did that. The UK needed a fleet that could patrol all of the world's oceans. That's no longer the case, since the former colonies and dominions are now independent and responsible for their own defense. That, and they're no longer a source of funding for the Royal Navy.
