@miamijules2149 The bigger problem by far was the whole ridiculous "diversionary attack" on the Aleutians. That was worse than useless to the Midway battle plan, it was actively detrimental. The whole idea was to lure the main American fleet into a decisive battle, so why would you want to divert some of them away? So all the Aleutians campaign did was make Midway an evenly-matched battle instead of bringing the extra aircraft of Ryuujou and Jun'you to Midway. Even given the overly-rigid IJN doctrine wouldn't allow sending Zuikaku in with a composite air group, they should've gone into Midway with a strong numerical advantage, and they didn't.
