  2. The smallest of the pro-Dunkerque designs that France considered was 17,500 tons, with 305mm/55 guns in two quad turrets and a projected speed of 35 knots. (That was the only option under the treaty system for a "large cruiser": to sacrifice some of your capital ship tonnage for it.) This was in 1926. With the better steel, more advanced machinery, and the use of welding, the Algerie designers probably could have achieved that on 16,000 tons. Though given the change in design philosophy they probably would've gone for increased armor in exchange for losing a couple of knots of speed.
