Well West Germany also declined Turkey's offer to send Yavuz/Goeben back for preservation a museum. Which is really unfortunate since she was the only battlecruiser left in the world, along with the only German-made capital ship.

I'm pretty sure Dreadnought would've sailed with the Grand Fleet at Jutland if she'd been available, but she was under refit at the time.

Well retiring them so soon made perfect sense. Even if they had been built to the X4 design, they still would've been obsolete a decade later on account of the inefficient turret layout and the fact that 12" guns had been completely left in the dust by 15" and 16" guns.

@johngrimlock5727 1 more gun while having 1 fewer barbette and turret. Meaning less space is taken up by the armament and less space needs to be inside the citadel. The weight savings could've resulted in a faster QE. Though a 3x3 QE wouldn't look as good as the 4x2.

Booms for torpedo nets. Those were later removed as torpedoes got bigger and faster to the extent that the nets were rendered useless.

@Hidensee Yep, lots of shells that didn't explode others that exploded prematurely. The latter caused a fair bit of superstructure damage, but not so much to the turrets and belt armor. For example, I've seen a post-Jutland photo of Von Der Tann in drydock, with a hole in the stern where a non-exploding 15" shell. If that shell had functioned property, the stern probably would've been blown off.

@mikemcghin5394 What I was wondering is, did those turret-top guns have their own gun crews, or did the turret crews simply go up there to man them if a destroyer needed shooting at?
