Why did the IJN want the Yamatos to engage 2 enemy battleships at once, instead of using their enormous firepower to take down each enemy as quickly as possible and then shift fire to the next? I know it's not a great idea to leave some of the ships in the enemy battle line completely unengaged, so that they can fire away at you for free. But when your battle line is substantially outnumbered by the enemy's, you're in a bad situation no matter what. If you're splitting one ship's firepower between two targets, that means both of them probably stay in the game longer. Whereas if you concentrate all of your firepower on a single enemy, you have a much greater chance of silencing its guns quickly. So why not just ignore the secondary target and hope that Yamato's ridiculously thick armor can just tank their fire until you shift attention to them? Being the 1 in a 2v1 is terrible odds regardless, but splitting your fire means you're going to remain in a 2v1 for much longer.
