@dreamingflurry2729 I find it hilarious how the USAF was insisting that fixed-wing aircraft are their "traditional role" and the Army shouldn't get them, long before the USAF had even existed long enough to have traditions.

The F-104 was also designed to be a pure high-altitude high-speed interceptor, and with the F-104G it got shoehorned into being a multirole fighter despite being not particularly well-suited for it. The SR.177 likely could've been used as a multirole fighter just as effectively as the F-104G was: not very.

I also have to wonder if Lockheed bribed Duncan Sandys (author of the 1957 Defence White Paper) to sabotage the British aircraft industry. That would explain why Sandys was so adamant that the SR.177 not even be developed for export (which wasn't even any of his business, since Saunders-Roe was a private company an no longer using any government funding for the plane's development).

1:20 Brilliant concept: thinking that reduced competition and increased bureaucracy would somehow lower costs.

So, are we sure that Duncan Sandys wasn't a Soviet agent?

@huudielbo728 And the gigantic setback to the entire British aviation industry in 1957, when Churchill's idiot son-in-law Duncan Sandys not only cancelled almost all British combat aircraft, he even actively sabotaged efforts to sell those aircraft to other nations.
