@georgefriedman1615 Theodore Roosevelt actually did come back 4 years later and ran for a third term in 1912, but lost. And declining to run for reelection in 1908 was less about upholding tradition and more about keeping his word. TR had promised in 1904 that he wouldn't run again in 1908, so he didn't.
Prior to that, in 1880 Ulysses S. Grant ran for a 3rd term after having been out of office for 4 years (and reputedly having strongly considered running for reelection to a 3rd term in 1876), but narrowly failed to win the Republican nomination.
Similarly, Grover Cleveland ran for a 3rd term in 1896 (and his 4th bid for the presidency overall, having won in 1884, lost in 1888, and won again in 1892), but despite being the incumbent President failed to get the Democratic nomination.
And Woodrow Wilson had openly intended to run for a 3rd term in 1920, but his stroke in 1919 made that impossible. Though he probably would've lost badly even if he had been able to run, given the major economic collapse in 1920.
