  1. Not just a language; Russia invented the whole nation of Moldova. Not the name, that's entirely real. But the current country is only the eastern half of historical Moldova. The western half remains part of Romania, as it has been since 1859 when the Romanian principalities (Wallachia and Moldavia) united. The invention of the "Moldovan language" was one part of Russia's larger propaganda effort to create an artificial Moldovan nationality, so as to prevent a reunification (or re-reunification?) with Romania.
