  1. For the record, Lift Every Voice and Sing was first promoted as the "negro national anthem" by the NAACP in 1917. While the Star-Spangled Banner was adopted as the national anthem in 1931. So we had a "black national anthem" for 14 years before the US actually had an official national anthem.
