Yes, it was clearly a huge mistake for Somaliland to join Somalia. And they've been trying to get out of it for decades. If they have to suck up to Trump to accomplish that, you gotta do what you gotta do.

@Usermaatre6723 And if the United States were to recognize Somaliland's independence, the deal would be back in an instant. Because there would no longer be any downside for Ethiopia.

@Ben-ev5se Congo as a single country dates to just 1960. Without Belgian colonization (or some other European colonizer doing the same) it never would've been a single country. You'd probably have a country roughly matching the borders of the old Kingdom of Kongo in the southwest, another around the old Kingdom of Lunda in the southeast (ie the Katanga region, more or less), and probably two or more smaller countries to the north. Rulers (and the outside world supporting them) stubbornly trying to maintain the colonial borders is a big part of why Africa has struggled so much to recover from colonialism. Remember, the colonizers did not draw these borders to viable nations. Quite the opposite, they specifically drew them to not be viable nations.

7:24 Even given all the rampant corruption, this seems like a strange choice. You'd think Obiang and Obiang would want to keep the capital in Malabo, where there's a literal ocean separating them from all the peasants they're oppressing. Hard for a revolution to happen if any potential rebels don't even have physical access to where the rulers live.

@jasonhaven7170 All Germans are one ethnic group. Yet Germany and Austria exist.

On the plus side, you'd have already achieved a higher life expectancy than most people born in 1980s Iraq. Okay, actually that's an exaggeration. But not that much of one, which illustrates how bad things have been for Iraqis.

10:00 Ironically, this "change from French names to African names" largely resulted in names that were less authentically African. Including the name "Zaire" itself, which was actually a Portuguese corruption of "nzere" (the Kikongo word for "river").

Puntland is separate from Somaliland, and while itself de-facto independent, Puntland doesn't actually want to separate from the rest of Somalia like Somaliland does.

@heinzdoof1575 The "Hindu" caste system in form known today doesn't actually originate from Hinduism. It's a creation of the British colonial administration. They took what was previously a looser concept of castes (not all that different from how class stratification develops in every society) and made it a much more rigid system. This was one of the ways the British divided the Indian people in order to prevent any unified rebellion from developing. They also deemed some Indian ethnic groups to be "martial races" who were to be used as colonial troops but always kept uneducated so they wouldn't be able to command armies. While other races that the British deemed "more intellectual" and less loyal to the colonizers were to be kept out of the military and derided as cowards so that nobody would follow them. And then when Britain left India, they opted to divide it into two nations (one of them, Pakistan, not even being contiguous, which would cause massive problems for what later seceded to become Bangladesh) on purely religious lines between Muslim and Hindu regions. Completely ignoring the Sikh religion, and also ignoring regions like Bengal with a long history of identifying more on the basis of shared ethnicity than religion. All because once they decided they were through with colonialism, Britain just wanted to abandon the mess they'd created as quickly as possible and leave it purely the Indians' problem to solve.

1:34 Donald Trump is not an isolationist, he's simply pro-Russia, pro-autocrat in general, and anti-democracy.

@jamier65551 Honestly I suspect they invited the DRC just to get Katanga. With gaining an Atlantic coastline as a side benefit.

A country whose borders were drawn by people who had never set foot in it and neither knew nor cared about the people who were living there. Then install a foreigner as king. What could possibly go wrong?

@SRC-Kacaan As opposed to the rest of the Somalia?
