Especially if the vehicles have been poorly maintained. Which is clearly the case for many Russian military vehicles.

@Tinylittledansonman I'm guessing the lack of thermal vision on Russian tanks (even though most of their upgrade packages over the last 30 years claim to have it) is a mix of limited budget (especially in the 90s and 2000s), and corruption sapping what's left of the budget away from what's actually needed. And as for the poor troop performance, you have conscripts who seem poorly-trained and unmotivated. IIRC, Russia law says that conscripts during their 2-year period of duty aren't used in operations outside of Russia. They're supposed to be solely defensive units. Russian law being at best a casual suggestion to Putin and his staff, they're being set into a foreign war anyway. (In fact, some rumors suggest the generals haven't told Putin about including the conscripts in the invasion force, because that would be a sign that things were going poorly.) Some of them apparently didn't even know they were being sent to war, particularly against fellow Slavs, until the invasion was actually launched.

@matovicmmilan Russia does indeed have their own domestically designed and built thermal sights. But are they capable of domestically building every component of those thermal sights? Or do they need to use imported parts?

The Stielhandgranate has a very distinctly Germanic look to it. Even other stick grenades like the Soviet RGD-33, which has a much shorter stick, can't be mistaken for it. It was inevitable that it'd be one of the iconic German weapons.

@kentmacalalad At the time it was thought that HEAT shells and missiles would defeat all armor, so trying to armor against them would just weigh the tank down pointlessly. So the Leopard and AMX-30 were both armored against autocannon fire and shrapnel from artillery, with no attempt to armor against the latest tank guns.

What a surprise that the right-wing AfD that's bankrolled by Russia is the German party with the most opposition to arming Ukraine.
